Introduction to Hunan Institute of Science and Technology
Hunan Institute of Science and Technology (HNIST) is a provincial undergraduate university, which is well known for science and engineering subjects as well as the balanced development of science, engineering, liberal arts, economics, management, law, education and arts. HNIST is a master degree granting unit approved by Academic Degree Committee of the State Council and is one of the first universities to be granted with “the 13thFive Year Plan” National Production and Education Integration Development and Application-oriented Undergraduate University” in Hunan Province.

Long History of Education
The history of HNIST can be traced back to its founding in 1910 when it was first known as “Lakeside University” (湖滨大学- hú bīn dàxué) originally founded by Americans. Over the past century, the institute has experienced many changes. In March 1999, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, the former Yuyang Teachers Junior College, Yueyang College and Yueyang Education College were merged into “Yueyang Normal College” which was renamed in February 2003 “Hunan Institute of Science & Technology”. Since the founding the People’s Republic of China, HNIST has trained over hundreds of thousands of high-quality application-oriented talents for the society and has had a great number of alumni at both home and abroad.
Well-equipped Teaching Facilities and Infrastructure
HNIST is composed of East and South campus (new campus) which are connected by the South Lake, covering an area of 2000mu (about 133 hectares), with a lake line over 2.8 kilometers. The construction area of HNIST is 700, 000 square meters (70 hectares). The total assets of the institute are 1. 5 billion yuan (about 230.7 million US dollars); the teaching and scientific research equipment is worth 200,000,000 yuan (30.7 million US dollars), and the library contains more than 2.20 million copies of various books (including 78,0000 digital books). With a great variety of studying, living, cultural and sports facilities, HNIST has been granted many honors, such as “National Civilized Unit”, “National Advanced Unit in Arts Education”, “National Advanced Unit in Afforestation”, and “National Advanced Unit in Mass Physical Education” and so on.
High Quality Faculty Team
HNIST has a well-structured, high-quality, and well-educated faculty team with over 1300 faculty and staff members, including 160 professors, 200 PhD, 150 master degree supervisors and 20 foreign teachers. HNIST also has over 150 professors winning different national and provincial honors, namely, national “Thousand Scholar Plan” Distinguished Scholar, the Special Government Allowance of the State Council, “New Century Advanced Talent Support Program” of the Ministry of Education, National Friendship Award and Provincial Outstanding Teacher. HNIST has also employed nearly one hundred scholars and experts from both home and abroad as full-time and part-time professors, including world renowned pianist Michael Arkadev and has been awarded with “National Advanced Unit in Teachers’ Ethics Construction”
Great Achievements in Teaching Reform
HNIST has committed to the integration of production and education, the cooperation between university and industries and has deepened the educational and teaching reform and obtained many projects, namely, 2 educational system reform pilot projects of Hunan Province, 1 key project of education construction of Hunan Province, 2 national subject comprehensive reform projects, and 1 production and education cooperation subject comprehensive reform of the Ministry of Education. Currently, HNIST has 18 schools (departments), 54 undergraduate majors, 4 national special majors, 9 provincial special majors, 1 national university student practicum base, 10 national university students’ creative and innovative projects, and 12 provincial teaching practicum platforms.
Cultivation of High Quality Talents
HNIST has paid much attention to the training of students’ ability in innovation and practice. As a result, students have won many first prizes in National Electronic Design Contest, National Mathematical Modeling Contest, and National College English Speech Contest.Even in one year, more than 6 students were granted with national practical patents. HNIST has also been granted with “National Advanced Unit in Undergraduate Employment”. HNIST has over 23,000 full-time students (including independent college students), and 40 overseas students.
Consolidating Subject Platform Construction
In recent years, HNIST has strived to implement innovation-driven strategies to meet with the requirement of application-oriented talents needed by industry transformation and upgrade, to integrate with the cutting edge industry and new development in Yueyang. Till now, HNIST has established 27 key subject platforms with other industries. It has 5 provincial key subjects, 3 academic master degree conferment units, and 2 professional master degree conferment units.

HNIST stresses the importance of opening education and expanding students’ international horizon. Nowadays, HNIST has established partnership with many universities from the United States, Germany, Canada, Russia, Japan, and Korea to conduct “3+1”, “2+2”, “3+2” undergraduate and postgraduate joint programs. HNIST has been enrolling international students in various subjects since 1985, and has also employed 23 foreign teachers to teach in various schools. Among them, one foreign teacher won the National “Friendship Award”. Thus, HNIST was awarded “National Advanced Unit in the Introduction of Foreign Intellectuals”.
